Campaign Story
Hi Everyone!
I am Karen Yabo. I work as a medical technologist at Philippine Red Cross and hopes to finish my master’s degree in the future. From what you can tell, I am your average 27 year-old adult living my life to the fullest with big dreams for myself and for my family until I was diagnosed with cancer.
Last June, I had myself checked because I felt a sudden pain while breathing. My x-ray showed a hilar mass. The hilar area is sometimes referred to as the roots of the lungs as it consists of the major bronchi and some pulmonary veins and arteries. Since the mass in this area is causing me difficulty and pain in breathing, I had to undergo a CT scan which confirmed that I had ante-mediastinal mass.
I had to come here in Cebu from Cagayan to have it biopsied and I underwent a series of tests at Perpetual Succour Hospital to further build my case. Last September, my oncologist has confirmed that I have indeed Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. In non-medical terms, this means that I have malignant cancer cells forming in my lymph system.
This devastated me and my family. I think everyone who knew someone or seen someone with cancer understands what I am going through right now. Although I have used this cliche a lot of times, “everything happens for a reason” did not make sense to me. I am scared because I want to live. I want to fulfill my dreams. I want to see my future family. I still want to build memories with my friends. And most of all, I still want to give back to the community in whatever way I can.
Ever since my diagnosis, I have completed 1 round of chemotherapy and 4 sessions of radiotherapy at Perpetual Succour Hospital. My doctor said that initially I need to complete 8 sessions of chemo. Each session costs about 120,000php and it’s something my family and I cannot afford fully for now. I want to knock in each of your heart to help me with my treatment. I am so grateful for communities like this where I can share my story, ask for help because I can’t just sit here and be depressed and not fight this thing.
Your help will go a long way. If you are not in a good place right now, please help me by sharing my story so it will reach those who can give out monetary assistance. I will forever be grateful to all of you. May God bless your kind hearts. And please pray for me and for the treatment to work.
Your Future Cancer Survivor,
Karen

Hi, Karen. I think most of us will be having the same question as you did when you first knew about your condition. But maybe, God has given you a bigger story that perhaps no one has ever expected. He wrote this story for you which you will be able to accept and surpass. He chose you maybe because He knows that you are stronger than most people and that you have a solid support system to get through this with you. Your life is an inspiration not only to me but also to those who have read your story. I hope my very limited donation can help. I wish I could give more but I am also trying to make the ends meet at the moment. I will be praying for you. God bless you, Karen.
