Kapiyo self help group would like to set up a modern pawpaw, orange and horticulture garden which is well fenced and has a powerful solar pump for irrigation to help them eradicate poverty, enhance food security and climate change.
This project is set up along Lake Victoria in Homa Bay,Kenya. The membership of this group is drawn from women and men with low income earnings. Among the women are some widows who find it difficult to fend for their school going children and men survive from the little income they get from manual labor from the neighborhood which is hard to come by at times.
With their hard work, the group has come up with pawpaw seedlings which they would like to plant in order to supplement their income when mature with fruits. As a long term plan, they will combine these with orange trees. In the same piece of land while pawpaws are growing the group will also plant horticultural crops with short maturity harvesting period to enable them get food for their children and at the same time earn them some money to enable them sustain the project.
This project will also serve as a demo and learning farm to school going children in that, the schools around will be encouraged to visit the farm for learning purposes. Group and school collaborative efforts will be enhanced in order to promote the community by borrowing knowledge on how to set and manage such a project.
