The Kanungu Opportunity Fund is a one-time fund to support small, early-stage social entrepreneurship that aims to invest in communities across the Kanungu region. Donations are invited on the open premise that funds will be distributed to independent, grass roots projects with a clear social motivation and drive for bottom-up community development. It is solely my own personal endeavour.
Beneficiary initiatives can be:
Non-profit or for-profit
A charity, NGO, social enterprise, one-off project or regular/periodic programme
Spearheaded by an individual or group
Individuals with a desire to improve their and their family’s lives through private enterprise/income generating activities or personal development that crucially, will raise sustainable levels of household income
Allocation of funds will not be subject to standardised assessment criteria or application processes, but distribution will be judged on a case-by-case basis, centred upon personal relationships with each potential beneficiary, visits to/experience of their project and enough enquiry int0 its viability and potential for positive community impact to feel convinced of its merit.
It’s simple, opportunity-driven and instinctive. As it is a funding venture reliant on my presence in Kanungu, and recognising that my time there is finite and relatively short, it simply intends to help in some small way a few of the many inspirational, altruistic and incredibly hardworking people I find myself lucky enough to meet and live and work alongside.
It adopts an uncomplicated and casual approach: if I like it, I trust it, think it could work well and benefit people, the fund will consider helping it. I’m realistic – I know that funds will be very limited, but I will divide them in the best way I can between projects to which I feel most connected.
If you like donating to worthy causes, whether it be once in a lifetime, on a regular basis or only at certain times of the year, why not give this time to a small, targeted initiative where every penny is guaranteed to be delivered to a worthy community project in person? However generous you’re able to be, rest assured that it will help.
I will work with my enterprising colleagues and friends to help begin the change they desire to bring about, directly with the support you offer. As immediate results will be minimal and the real impact visible over the longer-term, as far as is possible I'll document how funds are being initially invested throughout, for a measure of accountability and transparency.
It may not provide all that is needed, it may be far from enough, but even a modest contribution of help in raising much needed capital can make a profound and lasting difference. We can’t do everything, but why should that stop us from trying to do something?
This Christmas, consider an alternative way to channel your goodwill.

My love and thanks to you!
