This campaign isn't about guilt or innocence, it's about the systematic failure of our legal system. Excessive bail amounts are used against impoverished people of color as a way to lock someone up who is presumed innocent until otherwise proven. My friends bail was set at an excessive amount because her alleged victim is white and she is a Latina. I hope you are willing to help me bail her out, a short version of her story is below.
My friend Leticia Nemetz was manipulated and groomed by her Marine Recruiter into a relationship (they met when she was 17). She didn't have a happy family life and I doubt anyone told her they loved or cared for her on a daily basis. Once she graduated he seduced her and they started a relationship (which is illegal according to the Marine Corp, but he has never been punished). After three months he told her he was married, but by then she was fairly deep into the relationship. After a year and a half together, when his wife was finally catching on... he ghosted her and took out a Personal Protective Order (PPO). Due to his personal relationship with the sheriffs office and the fact that he is white and she is a Latina, the prosecutor has gone after this case like a pit bull (Just to be clear, Leticia never threatened violence, brandished a weapon or did anything violent during her alleged encounters). The judge claims that Miss Nemetz's bail is set so high for the protection for the community. But $350,000 is excessive for a simple PPO violation that never contained any violence or threat of violence. The bottom line is this... a privileged man cheated on his wife, disgraced the Marine corp by seducing a sleeping with a recruit (a violation of the Military Code of Uniformed Justice), and then used his friendships and community connections to have another poor brown girl locked up.
