Journey of Prince John Rei in Fighting Biliary Atresia

My name is Edna Vargas and my baby grandson desperately needs a liver transplant before he turns 2! Please help us save him. His name is Prince John Rei Obligar and he is a happy little boy even though he has already suffered so much. He was born with bilateral cleft lips, cleft palate, and Biliary Atresia that has led to liver failure. He had a temporary procedure on his biliary tract at age 3 months, but he really needs a liver transplant before age 2. Without intervention, the survival rate of biliary atresia is 50% at age 2 and close to zero at age 5. Prince John Rei is not a candidate for cleft lip or palate repair because of the risks associated with his serious liver condition. There is no way we can afford the 1.4 million Philippine pesos (about $35,000 ) needed for the liver transplant. We have already spent what we have on medications and doctor's visits. My daughter, Prince’s mother Reinna, had to stop her undergraduate schooling in business administration in order attend to her son’s significant medical needs. Prince’s father, Jerbee, has been trying hard to work any jobs he can to send Prince to the hospital and have him checked regularly. The little family is living with us now, for they can’t afford to live on their own any longer with all the medical expenses. I am a teacher and have two other children to support through schooling. We love Prince so much that we have all tried to sacrifice for him, but it is very painful that we are not able to help our little boy get the transplant he needs!

Liver transplantation has changed the outcome of biliary atresia in more affluent countries. The ten-year patient survival rate after liver transplant is 85-90%.
