This page was set up for my friends to help three of my students pay the rent for a small flat during a four-months internship in Istanbul.
Ahmed, Mohanad & Hasan are three eager students that I met and taught in November 2014 in Reyhanli, a small Turkish town near the Syrian border. They attended the advanced Journalism workshop that we taught in Karam Leadership Program.
The war forced them to leave their home & school in Syria. Two of them had to drop out of school for over a year, but they went back to classes and continued their education in Al Salam School. Now, they graduated from high school and their dream is to become journalists.
For the past year, they stayed in touch with me, sending me their stories and articles for editing & working to improve their reporting & storytelling. Their hard work and determination has been a source of inspiration.
Living in exile, their path is already full of obstacles. But they're one step closer to pursuing their dream. They got a four-month internship in an Arabic paper in Istanbul. This experience is extremely important for them: they will get real reporting assignments and they will work closely with an experienced journalist, Mr Absi Smesem, the editor in chief of "Sada Al Sham" paper. He will help them improve their stories and get them published. Mr Smesem is a veteran journalist whom I met and interviewed in 2012.
Here's more about him.
They boys are moving from Reyhanli to Istanbul and they will need a place to stay.
We found a one-bedroom flat right next to the office and I am trying to raise funds to help them pay the rent.
The rent is 350 USD a month
And they will need additional 50 USD every month.
The total is 400 USD x 4 = 1600 USD.
I am a Syrian American journalist covering the Middle East.
