Josh is a Class of 2014 West Point graduate who became ill in his senior year at the academy. He was diagnosed with a paraneoplastic syndrome - a rare condition seriously affecting his nervous system - in the fall of 2014. (Learn more here: https://rarediseases.org/rare-diseases/paraneoplastic-neurologic-syndromes/) Josh was unable to be commissioned due to his illness.
Josh was able to work for a time after graduation, but his condition worsened substantially in September 2016. He has had several hospitalizations and has had two “close calls” in the past couple of months. Due to missing work (and a commission-based salary structure), he has not been able to earn a paycheck in the last month and a half. Additionally, travel for specialty medical care has taken a substantial toll on his and his family’s financial resources.
Josh is currently in the process to gain VA benefits (he should be eligible for full benefits, given his 2 years of military service prior to entering the Academy), but does not have that financial/other support now.
