Hello 🙋😊

I was just hoping people might be able to help my brother Joseph (27) to get a bebionic arm with a power function elbow.

Joseph got encephalitis when he was 7 years old and subsequent white matter brain damage due to this, resulting in epileptic and behavioural issues until his 20's.

Things started looking up, his brain damage healed, Joseph became calmer, his seizures became less erratic, then he got cancer in his wrist in 2011.

The cancer was extremely rare was known not to respond to chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and was on the brink of spreading. The only option was the amputation of his arm a few inches above the elbow.

Joseph is resilient though, sewing his own buttons back on one-handed, just months later; stunning the nurses at his problem solving skills and quick learning, and still beating everyone at pool.

The be-bionic hand and components (power function elbow, socket and flexible wrist) costs just over 40k in a quote we got from the Hci-Vivocare clinic in Glasgow (since stopped trading, please see updates 08/05/20) and will require Joseph and one carer to travel down to get the arm measured/fitted etc.

The therapy to learn how to work the arm/hand may also cost £150 a session; so we have set the goal to reflect this, also adding on the gogetfunding fee (4% of each donation) to pay for the funding page.

There will also be travel costs added for flying from Shetland to the clinic's location aswell as possible hotel fee's.

We've done bag packing at a local supermarket and are planning to do events as well which we will keep you posted on in the updates :)

Here’s a website link for the hand If you want to see it in action, there's YouTube video links there as well. Or watch the youtube video above :)

I feel like it’s a big ask, but then I remind myself: I see causes on her and similar funding webpages; on Facebook; on TV; collection boxes etc, etc. the whole time for cancer research, how to prevent it, how to bring awareness, but not so many for the survivors, and I hear very little about the amputees.

This would have a real impact, quickly, if he got it. Simple things that get overlooked, like hanging up his washing, or putting on a belt, will become easy again.

If you can spare anything, it would be life changing 😊

Hi 😊Sorry for the lack of updates but we've been busy 😄Joseph has grown his hair a bit ... and has also had a new quote for the be-bionic hand plus components nearer to home (Glasgow), so I thought I'd better get my finger out and edit the page to. . . . .
