Jonathan’s Motorhome Dream

A LITTLE ABOUT JONATHAN

Jonathan is 11 years old.  He was born with Spina Bifida, Hydrocephalus, Neurogenic bowel and bladder, and a host of other issues.  My husband and I were searching for a son to adopt and we found the perfect person in Jonathan.  The outlook for his future was pretty grim but we knew imedetly he was the son for us.  We decided early on not to tell Jonathan what he couldn't do and just let him be who he was.  Jonathan has far surpassed what the doctors thought he would be able to do.  With great determination and spirit and the help of leg braces Jonathan walks, runs, rides a 2 wheeled bike and skateboards.  He has endured many surgeries and faces a lifetime of shunt revisions and other surgeries but that does not deter him from dreaming big.

THE DREAM

Two years ago we took a family vacation to Oklahoma.  We traveled by car stopping at motels along the way which caused Jonathan a great deal anxiety. Due to the medical care he needs each day Jonathan was worried the motel would not be set up for him.  As soon as we got home Jonathan got online and researched ways of travel and discovered motorhomes with bunkbeds.  He wanted to know if he could buy one.  I showed him the price and he was not detered at all - he developed ways he could earn the money - recycling - making bracelets - doing chores.  I thought he would tire of all the work and become discouraged quickly.  Boy, was I wrong.  Not only is Jonathan still actively working towards his goal - he has packed his bags with all the things he wants in his bunk space to make it his very own.  In the past 2 years he has earned just over $600. 

Jonathan has many adventures planned when he gets the motorhome but the first adventure is to see his oldest brother in Florida.  Of course Disney World is a must when we will be so close but the first stop will be to see his brother.
