On 12th March, Ben and Petra are embarking on Cape Town's annual 109 km Cape Argus cycle race together, to raise money for the South African National Council for the Blind. As neither of us can recognise the other in the arrivals hall at the airport without glasses, this is a cause close to both our hearts!
A few facts:
- Approximately 80% of the visually impaired population in South Africa live in rural areas where the unemployment figure can be as high as 100%.
- The prevalence of sight disability in South Africa is the highest of all disabilities (32%)
- Cataracts account for 39.1% of global blindness
- Over 45 million people around the world are completely blind.
The South African National Council for the Blind works at restoring sight and preventing blindness, offering support through rehabilitation and community development and providing, among many other services, mobile eye care and medical assistance in remote rural areas.
All contributions of any amount are really welcome! For more information on the charity, please see http://www.sancb.org.za/about-us. Thank you and wish us luck—and a tail wind !! :-)
