My husband Joe's leukemia has returned and we will need to temporarily relocate for 2-3 months to Johns Hopkins hospital over 85 miles away from our home. The housing, out of pocket medical costs and unpaid time away from my job will be in the thousands.

This all started on Nov. 30, 2004 when in a small curtained area of our local hospital emergency room we heard those words that changed our lives forever, "your husband has leukemia". We were just one month past our first wedding anniversary and the loss of my job.

Amazingly after months of treatments he was considered in remission. During that time we packed in as much togetherness as if we had been married 10 years. Joe called it, "extreme marital bonding". We were in our forties when we first met and wed. We considered it a gift to allow us grow an intimacy which would normally have taken years.

Unfortunately within a year his leukemia was back and then further courses of chemo and the desperate search for a donor. The search ended when a wonderful young man in Germany was a match and on June 10, 2006 Joe received his transplant. But this happy time also had a dark cloud. Just one month before this I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Thankfully my treatments were also successful.

With the last two weeks we have learned that Joe's leukemia has returned. We no longer live near a transplant center as we did 8 years ago and thus need to travel very far for his treatments and are actually required to relocate there. The last time we were lifted up and supported by friends, family and many others. Our prayers and faith have sustained us and will continue to carry us along. We ask you also help us through this next dark time. Thank you.

Update posted by oscar5661 alampi at 10:46 am

Another round of chemo was necessary because the scan showed all of the cancer was not gone. Joe received the treatments in the first week of February. The chemo after affects have landed him in the hospital again. Once he sparked a fever we knew that it was inevitable. On Monday, February. . . . .

Back from the Brink

Update posted by oscar5661 alampi at 07:50 pm

How wonderful to see Joe feeling like himself, enjoying a first beer in a long time and being home. We made it up to Baltimore to meet with the transplant team and to tour the place that will be our home for a few months. We then received some unwelcome. . . . .

First Chemo Course and Effect

Update posted by oscar5661 alampi at 08:48 pm

Joe's first chemo was administered the week of December 8-12. This week he began feeling the affects. His white count is just at about zero - which means he has no resistance to infection. His platelets, the blood element that allows us to clot and not bleed out, were low. . . . .
