What is JML Rotary Scout?

JML Rotary Scout, is a Tosca 36' cruising yacht owned and operated by SCOUTS South Africa, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the development of the youth of South Africa.

Scouting uses a method of learning by doing and adventure as a means to achieve its aims of:

  • Developing character;
  • Training in citizenship;
  • Developing spiritual, social, intellectual and physical qualities.

JML Rotary Scout feeds into this by providing young people with the adventure of a lifetime while also learning skills for life!

Cape2Rio 2020

We are entering the 2020 edition of Cape2Rio with all youth team! Cape2Rio is an iconic ocean race, covering some 3600 nautical miles (6600 km) across the Atlantic ocean from Cape Town, South Africa to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil! It is a gruelling test of character and seamanship skills.

Our entire youth team consists of two co-skippers, both aged 21. The crew are six Scouts between the ages of 15 and 18.

Everyone on the team began their Scouting journeys at the age of 11. They started learning how to sail on dinghies and have been trained in skills such as pioneering, first aid, navigation and cooking. Most importantly, through the Scouting programme, they have not only learnt practical skills but have been able to actively practice teamwork and leadership.

Competing in Cape2Rio is the adventure of a lifetime and means reaching the pinnacle of their Scouting career. This is our only shot at making it as an all youth team and we hope to make it count.

In order to run a successful campaign, we need to fundraise R100 000 to cover the crew expenses. We would greatly appreciate any donations towards our campaign. Our target on this website will appear as US$7000. This is because we have to set the currency to USD in order to be able to withdraw from funds from Paypal.

Any additional funds raised will be put towards ensuring that JML Rotary Scout continues to run in the near future and is accessible to Scouts around South Africa.
