Meet Our Friend, Jerry Miller

There is a friendly fellow named Miller

Who is in his family a pillar.

One quiet evening at home

To the kitchen he did roam.

And what happened was nearly a killer!

To the hard floor Jerry did fall

Hitting his head before the sprawl.

And little did we know

That his neck broke in the blow.

His recovery is now a long-haul.

After weeks of ICU care

There is so much now to share….

That hit to the floor

Actually paralyzed “all four.”

And the future presents hardships to bear.

His family’s doing all that they can

For this once very active man’s man.

They want to see quality of life

And to help his caretaker wife.

That’s why we came up with this plan.

YES, we are asking for your support

As we need many in our court!

Expenses are oh-so-high…

And with insurance, we still cry!

Our hope is to not fall short.

We thank you in advance

For giving our case a glance.

We’ve learned that each day is dear

And we embrace just having him here.

Despite this life changing circumstance.

UPDATE FROM MID-APRIL♥️.

All rhyming aside, Jerry’s C4 spinal cord injury is devastating, leaving him a quadriplegic with added lung function deficits.

He now has a tracheostomy and receives his nourishment through a feeding tube.

Jerry’s status, while complicated, is not medically serious enough for him to require hospitalization. However, his care needs seem to be too complex for rehab centers or nursing care homes to accept him. It has been an exhausting, sad and frustrating time to locate a facility that would take him as a long term patient. After so many negative replies, the only place to go was HOME. … truly!

Nancy was already busy trying to use every donated penny wisely to renovate their home! The goal was to provide a safe place to receive dear Jerry. Everything from a wheel chair shower to door ramps, wide doorways with wheelchair entrances and hard floors was on the project list.

There have been so many expenses adding up on this modestly retired couple it’s daunting. Insurance has denied many things… most especially a power tilt in space wheel chair. Nancy is shopping to see if a used one can be located. It costs several thousand dollars. Additionally, payment for extra care has been denied!! Granddaughter, Kennedy has most graciously been coming for a few hours daily to give Nancy a break. These part time private paid hours for Kennedy have been extremely helpful for both Nancy and Jerry. Jerry’s care is very, very busy with much to do to keep him stable and all systems functioning.

WHAT ABOUT JERRY?

Jerry’s career spanned 4 + decades specializing in Human Resources. He worked in both Sioux Falls, SD and Grand Junction, Colorado as a VP in health care Human Resources, plus consulting in HR. In GJ, CO, he spent 14 years at Mesa Development Services, now STRIVE, a non-profit organization supporting people with developmental disabilities, where he lead their HR department. These relationships between people and organizations were Jerry’s passion. He has delightful friendships in many states as a result of these roles.

Jerry loves his dogs! Izzie is his current fur baby. Jerry is also known for being a fantastic turkey hunter! The Broncos, whether winning or losing, is his favorite football team. He is a loved Grandfather attending many of his grandchildren’s competitive and recreational games. And, in winter, Nancy and Jerry have been snowbirds getting out of Colorado to Casa Grande, Arizona for some warm weather months in the sun. They enjoy the best of two worlds: Warm and Warm :) These wonderful photos show Jerry, the husband, father, friend, grandfather, Bronco supporter, dog lover of Izzie, hunter and Snowbird to Arizona in Winter:)
