I, Jeremie N. Dela Cruz, 21 years old, was diagnosed with Billiary Atresia when I was born. It is a rare disease that blocks the cells produced by the liver (bile) to be transported to the gallbladder. The bile trapped in the liver would cause damage and scar the liver cells, thus, liver failure. However, in my case, the bile ducts were missing. As a temporary solution, KASAI Procedure was performed when I was a month and a half (1 1/2) old. My gallbladder was removed and a segment of my small intestine served as my bile ducts, thus, restoring the bile flow and liver function.
Being a temporary solution, the procedure worked for 19 years and I was able to live normally. However, there are some minor complications during those years. I was annually hospitalized due to lack of minerals such as potassium and magnesium which required infusions. This year, I was strongly advised by my doctor to undergo LIVER TRANSPLANTATION the soonest possible due to various severe complications occurring. Last June 2017, through CT Scan, liver abscess were discovered. It was aspirated and treated with IV and oral antibiotics. Unfortunately, since my liver is damaged and infected, liver abscess continues to appear. Hence, for every month since June, I was confined. Overall, the medical expenses is huge and became a financial constraint due to continuous CT Scans, MRI Scans, antibiotics and medical procedures. Sad to say, medicines cannot help my situation. Thus, the strong recommendation for a liver transplant.
For the operation alone, PHP 5,000,000 is needed approximately. For 21 years, I only receive financial support from my mother. She is a single parent and a government employee. Given the case, it reached to a point where her salary and financial support are not enough to support and pay for the medical expenses.
With my faith to our Creator, moral support from my mother, relatives and friends, and expertise of the physicians, I believe that I can survive my illness and bravely undergo the liver transplant if given the chance.
