Hi, Everyone!

I am Jela Marie Alcantara, a Senior Pre-School English Teacher in Singapore. I have been in the Early Childhood sector for 8 years. My passion is facilitating children's inquiry and learning experiences. I believe that every child has more than a hundred ways and languages of expressing themselves, in which, as an Educator, they must be acknowledged and developed to better support their strengths and improve their learning needs.

What am I trying to do?

I am turning a year older and every year, I trade my birthday celebration to an event that could benefit the children who are in need in the Philippines, my home. For the past years, I have celebrated my birthdays in 'Tahanan ng Pagmamahal Children's Home, Inc.' and 'Hospicio de San Jose', where I brought my family, relatives, and friends to volunteer with me. Also with 'Autism Society of the Philippines, where I donated a sum of money along with a friend.

This year, 2020, from April until November, I would like to raise a sum of money for my chosen charity, Autism Society of the Philippines as it is more close to my heart. I believe every child has the right to a proper education and I hope that children with autism in the Philippines will have more opportunities to be given the appropriate learning tools with the donation we are going to raise. Every penny counts and every contribution counts.

I would like to say my gratitude to everyone by just taking the time and patience to read this campaign and awareness. I hope that we can raise awareness with Autism and break the stigma that is tagged along with it- the shame, isolation, and rejection that children with autism and their parents get from the people who look at them.

What is Autism?

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterised by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication. There is not one autism but many subtypes, most influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Because autism is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. The ways in which people with autism learn, think and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently. 2nd April is World Autism Awareness Day. Help me raise awareness by sharing this and by contributing to the needs of the children with autism by donating. Every penny counts.

Where will the money go?

All donations will be transferred to the Autism Society of the Philippines with their donation link: http://www.autismsocietyphilippines.org/p/get-involved.html

How will the funds be used?

It will help support Autism Society Philippines' efforts towards education, awareness, advocacy, research, and support to individuals and families living with autism.

From the bottom of my heart,

A million thanks for your time with this campaign and awareness!

Lots of love,

Jela

My family, relatives, and friends.
