My name is Peter Beckman, and I've lived in Jefferson Village on Marshall Street for 16 years.

Over the years I've noticed an increase of traffic running between Arlington Boulevard and Lee Highway along Marshall, Summerfield and Rosemary Lane. In addition to the higher volumes of traffic, I'm seeing more and more distracted drivers and cars speeding through our neighborhoods.

We call the police, but one or two calls every now and then has never been enough for them to prioritize targeted enforcement in our neighborhoods regularly. With all of the kids in our neighborhood, I'm worried that it will be one of our children in the below photo instead of a car.

April 2009 Crash on Marshall betwen Chestnut and Carlton

In April 2009 a distracted driver was driving 35mph+ and hit a parked car, sending the SUV into a 270 degree flip until it rested on the curb. Luckily nobody was hurt, but it could have been worse.

I walk through our neighborhood regularly and do my best to get cars to slow down, but there are only so many hours in the day I can do that.

I realized that a better solution was to perform regular traffic surveys, where an automated machine using rubber tubes counts cars and estimates speed based on the time between hitting the two tubes. This is the VDOT standard for residential traffic surveys. With the survey data, we can provide police with targeted and specific times, days of week and location where the cars greatly exceeding the speed limit, allowing the police to be highly effective in their use of time, and for our neighborhood to get the most value.

Unfortunately traffic survey devices are expensive, and that's where I need your help.

With your support, I will purchase and manage a community traffic survey device, deploying it at various places throughout Jefferson Village and Greenway Downs for a few days at a time, gathering data that will be shared with the community. The community can then take action based on real data and coordinate calls to police to have targeted and effective enforcement done in our neighborhoods and our streets.

The data will be public and shared with our community.

The Traffic Study Device being Funded

The PicoCount 2500 Starter Package is a compact traffic study device and includes all the tubes and electronics in order to start traffic studies right away. The price is $559.00 for the package, plus $34.31 for UPS Shipping and about $30 for tax. The extra money will pay for additional tubes, concrete screws and other material to ensure proper deployment

Please help me make our neighborhood a safer place to live and play.
