Campaign Story
This fundraising is to prevent a travesty of injustice to continue any further. A mother and victim of domestic violence from her husband was fleeing further abuse in the care of a domestic violence shelter advocated by an officer. She was attending college courses and beginning to rebuild her life when hostile employees of the off-site residence, wrongfully called the police and she was told she could not stay based on her Muslim religious attire. The 2 male officers then began shoving, pulling her by her forearms and unnecessarily being physical and rough to her while on her way to her hotel room to gather her belongings and exit-with no place to go except back to her abusive husband. The supervisors and upper staff from the domestic violence shelter were nowhere to be found and they were unable to be contacted by phone through this ordeal to verify her rightful stay and to prevent discriminatory harassment in the first place -although she had been checked in and given a room from the staff on the prior shift. Once the officers reached her floor-that she was the only one residing on, the officers brutally attacked her physically and sexually when she attempted to call a civilian line reporting the officers. She was choked with the officer digging his nails into her throat, slammed onto the floor and against the walls in the hall and the elevator repeatedly while handcuffed. The white male officer then falsely claimed that he was the victim and charged her with a felony level assault and trespassing. The whole ordeal was captured on video surveillance however the Broward Sheriffs Office edited the footage and deleted portion of the attack on the woman, while maintaining the charges which have been pending for the past 3 years preventing her from getting hired with a pending felony to raise money for representation. The white male officer, shortly thereafter, was let go. She just gave birth to a newborn and needs this support to fight against police brutality and to advocate for police accountability and a violence free future for her and her baby.
