Jason’s New Lease On Life

Update posted by Jason Bruun On Apr 30, 2014

Back in high school I destroyed my knee in a wrestling accident.  That was the first time I met Dr. Kalo of Core Orthopedic in Sioux Falls, SD.  At the time he was with Dakota Sports Medicine in Fargo, ND and was young, energetic and after one visit had me scheduled to begin repairing my knee.
He repaired my ACL and scoped my knee.  It was determined that I had lost about 90% of the cartilage in my knee when my ACL tore.  I would describe the accident but it isn't relevant and can bother some people.  Let's just say it tickled alot and caused a lot of damage.

After a year he repaired the remaining damage to my knee, scoped it again and found I already had arthritis developing from the injury.  Dr. Kalo hinted that I would probably need a knee replacement by the time I was 30.  Well I was having no part of that, I was determined to push the limits and live life to it's fullest with what he was able to repair and save.

It has been 20 years now since the accident, another ACL after a snow boarding accident on Mary Jane Mountain at Winter Park where I lived for several winter seasons running ski rental stores.  That's a whole story in itself, I may have to write a book about it one of these days.

Anyway, I have pushed this knee to it's limits.  I was determined to get to 40 but I'll take a year early and I couldn't think of a better birthday gift.  I will have my operation 5 days before my birthday.  I am really looking forward to all of the unkowns that this will bring.
I thank each and every one of you for your help in every form it has come.  I truly appreciate it, it has been a long and frustrating journey getting to this point.  I am absolutely excited and nervous for May 13th.  I know this will give me a new lease on life.  I may never snowboard again but knowing I will be able to enjoy life without as much pain is enough for me today.
