Janice’s Dream

Good day

For those who do not personally know me, My name is Janice and I am 19 years old. I was raised by a single mother in the tiny community of Clarkson in the Eastern Cape. My mother is unemployed and as we live in a rural area with few opportunities, employment is hard to come by. Despite these difficulties my mother provided me with a loving, stable and supportive home and I was raised in a Christian environment with emphasis on work ethic, moral accountability and personal excellence. I have never used my lack of material benefits as an excuse to achieve less. To the contrary, it has spurred me on to achieve greater heights and I am motivated and determined to develop my talents and make a huge success of my life.

I am currently a first year Education student at Nelson Mandela University. Pursuing teaching as a career was not my first choice. In fact, during High School I promised myself that I would not go to University if it was teaching, because I wanted to pursue drama. In the end, I received a bursary for teaching, and here I am; chasing a degree.

My passion for acting grew when I started High School in 2013. During this time I was still finding my feet and myself. I struggled with depression at this time and acting became a means of dealing with the feelings I experienced. In the end I became really good at this craft. In 2018 I was sponsored by Brumilda van Rensburg and travel with Flair to attend Brümilda's acting academy. I haven't said this enough, but I'm really grateful to her for the opportunity she presented me with in 2018. She made me believe that acting is what I want to do for the rest of my life, even if it means starving.

The International Arts Talent Showcase is a platform that allows artists to showcase their talents on an international platform.

Every year auditions are hosted in each province of South Africa. Successful artists are given call backs and are invited to perform for a panel of international judges in Johannesburg. Successful applicants then go on to form the South African team that will represent South Africa in America.

Over the weekend of the 27th and 28th September 2019, I had the opportunity to perform for Tyler Perry's casting agent as well as the director of admissions for New York Film Academy. I was selected and given the amazing opportunity to form part of the South African team that will represent South Africa in New York in July 2020 next year. By taking this opportunity I will have the chance to showcase my talent for a wide variety of international agents, as well as a chance to obtain scholarships from New York Film academy.

The program costs about R75 890, but this amount excludes pocket money, Visa, passport, travel and medical insurance as well as flight tickets to and from the USA. The cost of the entire trip comes to a total of +/- R95 000. I have been trying to look for sponsorships, but have had no luck. I realized that I will struggle to raise the money needed to realize this dream opportunity, because not a lot of people consider the arts as a credible source of income. I respectfully ask that you consider assisting me. I can send all the details of the Convention should you or potential sponsors require them. And I have teachers that can give references should you require those as well. Any and all donations will be welcomed with open arms.
