I'm Jade and I'm a university freshman from the sunny island of Singapore. I've loved singing, acting and dancing since I was a child and there's nothing more I want to do than to share stories through the powerful mediums of theatre and music. I also believe in the transformative power of an arts education. By teaching our future generations to experience the world affectively and with empathy, we can create a kinder and safer future for our young people.
Now - I'm already a freshman in a university, why go to another college? After high school in 2020, I didn't think there was any hope of attending university overseas with a pandemic and no vaccine yet. I decided to commit to a 4-year college here as a Theatre Studies major, while taking musical theatre and acting classes on the side. However, less than half a semester into my first year, it became obvious to me that I needed to train as a performer and not just study theories and cultures. I wanted to create stories, not criticize them. I had to take a risk, and now was the time.
I'm applying to multiple colleges and conservatories across the USA and the UK. I truly believe that passion and tenacity is the key to success, and that if I put enough work into advocating for myself and the causes I care about, we will be seen and heard. I'm ready to push as hard as I can to break into the industry, but I need your help. If you could spare a few dollars, it would mean the world to me if you could contribute to my college fund. I promise to pay it forward too - if I get into a musical theatre or acting course, for every £10,000 I raise, I will mentor an underprivileged child from anywhere in the world in English, Creative Writing or Drama.
Here are some questions that I anticipate might be asked:
What will you be using the money for?
I will use the funds to pay for my university tuition first, before using any remaining money to pay for my room and board, utilities, visa and flight expenses, as well as any expenses I may incur as part of my studies. If I have money left over, I will use them to get teaching supplies for my students.
What will you NOT be using the money for?
My guarantee to you: I will never engage in any illegal activity in any part of the world, and the money will not be frivolously spent on "wants". This is money that you have entrusted to a young person with the hopes that she would do good with the help you've given. I will do everything in my power to make sure every cent counts.
What are your plans?
I hope to perform as a musical theatre performer anywhere in the world, but if I'm given the chance, I aspire to tell stories of strong women on Broadway. I'm also happy to teach people of all ages how to sing, act, dance, speak, read and write.
Why can't you just teach while you are abroad? I heard that private tutors earn a lot.
International students in the USA are not allowed to work off-campus. For the UK, we are not allowed to own a business or freelance, which private tutoring is likely to fall under.
