Campaign Story
ISKUL or Sekolah Bajau Laut is a community-based-children-led-school for the stateless Bajau Laut (Sama DiLaut) children in Pulau Omadal, Semporna, Sabah.The word “Iskul” means “School” in Bajau Laut language. The children of the Bajau Laut community face the following (not limited to) four problems:
- NO proper documents hence unable to attend school;
- Stuck in an inter-generational cycle of poverty and frequently engaged in begging;
- Social stigma;
- Glue-sniffing habit to overcome their worries.
These children are in need of a conducive and safe learning environment. Currently, classes are being conducted outdoors on a verandah, and when it rains, they have to conduct classes in a kitchen. They have been raising funds to build a hut for the children to have classes, as there is no fixed place where classes are held.
