Murder of Jina (Mahsa) Amini, on 16th of September 2022, by the so-called morality police in Iran sparked waves of protests, not only inside Iran, but also around the globe. The slogan “woman, life, freedom” turned into a global expression for the progressive movement led by those who fight against patriarchy, capitalism, and colonialism.

So Jina didn’t die and turned into the symbol of resistance for people around the world.

Red Roots Collective, a group of Iranian Eco-feminists and Socialists in Manchester, in collaboration with Gaskell Garden Project, is preparing to commemorate the transnational struggle of revolutionary socialists and feminists against the religious dictatorship in Iran. One of the main projects is to create a Mural of Jina on the wall of Nia Centre in Hulme, Manchester so that people of Our communities will remember the symbol of “women, life, freedom” movement in Iran, via street arts in Manchester.

The mural is going to depict Jina’s face as the symbol of revolutionary uprising in Iran and embodies the slogan of movement in various languages spoken by oppressed, non-Persian peoples of Iran such as Balochs, Kurds, Arabs who played a leading role in resisting against oppression.

We aim to gather on 24th of September to introduce the Mural, listen to the stories of resistance and solidarity inside and outside the country, and strengthen our links through music and food.

To organise this solidarity project Gaskell Garden and Red Roots Collective need to raise £1000, all of which will go to local artists, the muralist, as well as musicians from refugees communities who will be invited to perform in this solidarity event.

Please show your solidarity by supporting this project which will have a long-lasting effect on communities involved!

Let’s carve the image of Jina to celebrate a year of struggle and resistance in Iran.

Let’s show to the world that Manchester continues to be the place of solidarity and grassroots movements.
