iPad Wallkill Library Lend-a-Gadget Pilot Program

Hi folks:

We’re hoping that you will help the Wallkill Public Library, in beautiful and rural Orange County in the Mid-Hudson region of New York.

We’re hoping that you will join our library in helping to make sure that all of our residents can know how to benefit from the digital and wireless times that we live in.

We know that not everybody has Internet service in their homes and at work.  We also know that, with new technology, wireless technology, folks can use the Internet in places that provide free service, called wi-fi.  Such service can be obtained at places like Fedex and at other places, like Starbucks and McDonalds.  Our library also has wi-fi so that anyone can come in and connect to the Internet.

Some folk in our rural areas don’t have Internet service in their area yet, and others don’t have a computer or a laptop, or smartphone that has wi-fi, or a tablet, like an iPad.  Many such folk miss out on the great benefits that can be achieved just by having a gadget in their hand and by going to a wi-fi location to logon.  In addition, tablets are increasingly common for education. We also want to make sure that school age children have the chance to become more familiar with the technology that they will find in the classroom.  Not every child is able to gain the technological benefits of having these gadgets at home, and that is where their local library, like ours, lends a hand.  We are hoping to be able to provide these opportunities to the residents in our area.

That’s why, with Rural Broadband Company, Inc., we started the Lend-a-Gadget Pilot Program for Wallkill Public Library.

We’re working hard to find the right formula to be able to lend out tablets, just like checking out a book.  We’ll provide a technology library card, and the tablets will have our library barcode on them. In addition, we’ll add anti-theft software with ‘persistence’ so that the anti-theft software cannot be deleted from the tablet. In addition, like our books, we’ll have the tablets engraved with the language: ‘Property of Wallkill Public Library.’

Together, we can do a lot to help our community, and we’re hoping that we can count on your support for our campaign.
