Intensive Care Primate Nursery

You’ve called our rescue team and hospital, in need of help. Thank you for that profound act of trust with our indigenous wildlife. Now we come to you, humbly, to ask for your help in return as we try to raise funds for the expansion of our Intensive Care Primate Nursery.

CROW’s Primate Rehabilitation Programme has been growing for over 39 years. Due to human interference and a lack in conservation efforts, we’ve seen a spike in both Vervet Monkeys and Chacma Baboons admitted into the centre each year.

As urbanisation and habitat destruction hits an all-time high and members of the public grow increasingly exasperated by primates seeking territories within urban areas, it has become evident that we need to step in and change the face of environmental education in South Africa.

Each year, between the months of September and April, we admit between 20-40 baby primates whose mothers have fallen victim to the effects of urbanisation (these include the wildlife pet trade, bush-meat trade, shootings, poisonings, being hit by cars and attacked by dogs).

We not only work to protect the primates, but to assist the community with human-wildlife conflict solutions. During baby season we receive hundreds of calls for animals needing to be rescued, with at least 10 of these being for adult monkeys per day, who have been affected by urbanisation and human interference.

It is thanks to kind and compassionate members of the public, like yourself, who assist us with the information leading to successful rescues.

As an NPO we do not charge for our services in any way, yet we do rely on donations to care for these animals and render appropriate veterinary care once brought back to our centre. An expansion of our Intensive Care Primate Nursery will certainly give these babies the best chance at a second chance.
