Inspired leap of faith – Film studies to educate and inspire others through film

Towards realizing my dream of studying Film making, to in turn inspire and educate others through the medium of film.

Hi everyone,

My name is Sunet Basson. I am a South African nature conservationist.

I have decided to pursue the development of my creative talents to follow a career in the creative industry, namely to become a Film maker.

Films and documentaries have inspired me since I was very young. It also allowed me to explore otherwise inaccessible places, cultures and natural wonders. It has often deeply touched me, made me think differently about who I am, through the stories and lives of others. It has stretched my imagination to dream and to believe in the impossible! It has amongst other things, motivated me to follow my passion of conserving the natural environment and now in creating inspiring stories that will in turn touch the lives of others.

Education and Environmental education is a particular interest of mine and through the years I have been involved in various projects and programmes at local schools and communities, especially in the rural environment of South Africa. It is wonderful to see and hear the reflection of learners and elders alike as they are touched by the stories (through films) of people living close to and very dependent on the natural environment for their livelihoods. How this impacts them, makes them think differently about their own behaviour and actions. There are so many ways to teach others about life, though we are often most touched by the lives’ and stories of others. I want to continue and make a positive impact through education and awareness in the lives of children and adults alike worldwide.

I have over the years though come to realize that it is important to develop talents and interest, get connected (network) to really be successful in any industry.

That is why I have chosen to do an intensive practical (hands-on) international course, that will enable me to get industry-ready and connected within the course of a year. At the same time living and studying in New Zealand will grant me the opportunity to learn from industry-experienced tutors and the place, people & experience will surely add unique stories that I can write onto the film canvass.

I have been saving for more than seven years and now the realizing of my dream is so close…I only need a further 5,000 to realize the studies and my stay in New Zealand for the course duration.
