INSEAD INDEVOR Earthquake Relief Fund for Turkey and Syria

INSEAD INDEVOR Club is raising funds to support the relief efforts after the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria on February 6th, 2023. The donations will go to two grassroots organizations with exceptional disaster relief and social outreach capabilities, The White Helmet in Syria and Ahbap in Turkey.

Background:

On Monday at 4:17am local time a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck near the city of Gaziantep, devastating parts of Turkey and Syria. It was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks. Then at 13:24 local time, a second earthquake (M7.7) hit the Elbistan district around 80 miles north of Gaziantep.

Reports suggest that over 5,000 have been killed as hundreds of buildings collapsed, and more than 30,000 have been injured. These figures continue to rise.

Right now, rescuers are racing to save people in Türkiye (Turkey) and Syria who are trapped beneath the rubble and get shelter and support to those who have lost their homes or are afraid to return inside.

The Cause:

• The White Helmet in Syria

In a place where public services no longer function, The White Helmets risk their lives to help anyone in need – regardless of their religion or politics. these volunteers are known for their distinctive headwear, the rescue workers operate in the most dangerous place on earth and have saved more than 100,000 lives over the past five years.

After the devastating earthquakes of February 6th, 3000 White Helmets volunteers rushed to the ground searching for survivors and pulling the dead from collapsed buildings. They urgently need your support to respond to this disaster, find survivors and transport hundreds of injured people to hospitals in freezing snow and rain.

• Ahbap in Turkey

Ahbap is a cooperation movement that works with value systems based on solidarity, sharing and belonging through love. The organisation has a wide network of NGOs providing aid to those in Turkey and mobilised 47,000 volunteers to help manage losses and displacement caused by a wildfire in 2021.

In addition to their relief efforts, the organization has also created and will update a list of community centers and businesses that have opened their doors to those seeking refuge.
