Hello everyone! Thank you so much for taking the time to read and support myself and my partner Sthefany Torres! Your support means more than we could ever express!

The premise of the campaign is to launch an educational platform for medical coders to both learn and expand their expertise. While this project may not be one that will directly and/or immediately benefit you, eventually the hope is to positively affect our healthcare revenue system locally and nationwide which consequently benefits us all.

Additionally, you will be assisting me in realizing my own dreams and success and for that I would be forever grateful.

What is Medical Coding?

Medical coding is the transformation of healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes. The diagnoses and procedure codes are taken from medical record documentation, such as transcription of physician's notes, laboratory and radiologic results, etc.

What do medical coders do?

Medical coders review medical record documentation such as transcription of physician’s notes, diagnostic reports, pathology reports, operative reports, etc… From these, medical coders abstract information from the documents which then allows them to assign diagnoses and procedures codes to be applied correctly during the medical billing process, which includes creating a claim to be paid by insurance carriers.

Why is medical coding important?

Coding is a critical step in the revenue cycle process. It is required to submit medical claims with insurers and bills for insurers and patients. While “getting the bill paid” is important, both to patients and providers, medical codes do more than that. Medical codes are used for treatment outcomes, demographic assessments, population health studies (i.e. comparing projects and planning for under-served health care areas), aiding in administrative functions, as well as identifying symptoms that must be addressed and referenced by other physicians.

What are the educational requirements for a medical coder?

While a higher degree education is not a requirement, educatio and training is key to becoming a skilled and successful medical coder. There are several paths an individual can take to embark on the medical coding education journey. There are certificate level programs, Associate’s, and Bachelor’s degree which include coding in their curriculum. There are some healthcare providers that offer existing employees on-the-job training.

What’s the career outlook for a medical coder?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Medical Records and Health Information Technicians job outlook is to grow “15% much faster than average” for 2014-24.
