India Volunteer Project

Hi all,

this summer I am travelling all the way to India in partnership with Plan My Gap Year, who aim to work with communities in developing countries across the world. I am aiming to fundraise £750 to travel to Faridabad, located in the North of the country to help underprivileged children learn English.

The disproportionate wealth distribution in India, means that 28% still live below the poverty line. As a result, many children from deprived areas do not have a sufficient education. Despite the country placing a significant emphasis on the importance of education, many children go without. Those ‘fortunate’ enough to attend slum schools, often lack basic amenities such as adequate toilet facilities or learning resources.

Whilst in Faridabad, I will be working alongside other volunteers and teachers to teach children between the ages of three and fifteen. However, many of the schools are understaffed so rely heavily upon any additional support they can receive. By teaching English, the children are not only being provided with a new skill, but a gateway to employment and a chance to escape the cycle of poverty.

This is a huge and incredibly exciting opportunity for me, but also a rather daunting one. I have never been outside of Europe before, let alone by myself. However, I am extremely grateful that I have been able to do so to help those less fortunate than myself. Feel free to donate, regardless of how big or small or sponsor the 5K run I will be doing.
