In Memory of My Mom Olympia Habal

Dear friends and colleagues,

I am writing to you today to let you know about the sudden loss of my Mom Olympia Habal. She passed away on April 3, 2021, due to Cardiac Arrhythmia. She was scheduled for her regular dialysis on that day but could not proceed because she suddenly had critical low blood pressure which caused her very slow heartbeat. Her dialysis doctor recommended her to be brought to the emergency room right away since the heart condition and blood pressure did not seem to improve. We tried our very best to look for a hospital that could attend to her critical condition but unfortunately due to the current situation of our health care system and health facilities here in Metro Manila being in all full capacity, we were not successful. The current community quarantine because of the alarming surge of COVID-19 cases also rendered us some difficulties moving around. The last hospital that had a possible available room was where my mom had her last breath. Sadly, it was already hours since she started having difficulty in breathing. We could not imagine how this had to happen.

We are absolutely devastated and broken as we have been experiencing major blows since last year when she also got infected with COVID-19 right about when the pandemic was at its height. Right now, my family is struggling to find enough funds to cover the cost of the funeral and other bills. She will be laid to her final resting place on April 10, 2021.
