Sam was a wife, mother and above all an individual.

She was the most positive person you’d ever known and would not let things get her down. She was always one for putting others first including, family, friends and even strangers! She spent her short life looking out for and looking after others. Even when she found out she was ill, she still had a passion for life and enjoyed great adventures like flying in a microlight and zip lining across the sea from one cliff to another. She also had a passion for travel and as a family we visited 14 countries in a year, so we could make lasting memories. She kept up her spirit, fight and good humour until the end and passed peacefully in her sleep aged just 47.

As for Hospice, they became involved in January 2020, just before covid hit. At this point she was recovering from treatment and the doctors and nurses always tried to put her at ease and make her comfortable and always offered to help in any way. Things changed a little through early Covid days, the support switched from in person to on the phone, but our assigned nurse and doctor were always at the other end of the phone whenever we needed them.

In many cases it was to offer reassurance or help us navigate the complex health system to get the medication my wife needed, so even in the throws of the first wave of Covid they were there. Fast forward to this year, where my wife’s health slowly began to go downhill. Our nurse was again allowed to visit and continued to offer support and often pushed a little to make us see sense to get additional help, when maybe we were reluctant to do so. On every occasion she did this, things worked out, had we not listened to her advice, things would have been much worse.

Towards the end, everybody stepped up a gear, which was amazing, they arranged for around the clock support, regular doctor and nurse visits and made the last days of my wife’s journey as comfortable, pain free and peaceful as possible. Without Hospice Malta, none of this would have been possible. I’ll be honest, I thought Hospice was for “old people” but they don’t discriminate on age, sex or nationality and offer the same level of support to both patient and family regardless of their background.

My wife was just 47 years old when she passed. I will be forever in debt to the team at Hospice Malta and would appreciate any support you can give in memory of my wife Sam.
