Many of the children of Sierra Leone live in dire circumstances due to the remnants of the civil war, as well as the horrific ravages of the recent Ebola. So many are now orphaned and were initially abandoned due to the fear of people contracting the disease if they took these children into their homes.

Gradually, this fear has been overcome by several families who have taken in some of the Ebola orphans. To do so they have needed support as they have so little themselves. The next aim is to get the children back into schools. Our own sponsored school St Mary’s Balamorie in Kissy, Freetown has taken several. We are endeavouring to raise enough money to improve current facilities of the school, including to add an extra class room, a small medical room, and provide an access to water supply from the well which was dug last year. This is only possible by using a pump which will fill a tank, from where water can be then collected using a tap.

Along with younger children from our sponsored school, we also help a group of young blind orphans, whom we came across during one of our recent visits to Sierra Leone. They are cared for by an amazing man Mr Koroma, who himself is blind. We have already sent clothes and staple foods but, as you would imagine, their needs are great. At present, there are in a hired and run-down building, which has become derelict. There is little shelter from the deluges of the rainy season. They have now have been asked to leave as the owner wants to sell the land.

The first thing in our plan is to build a solid block workshop, where these young people can be taught life skills and ways of making a living, one of which they are doing at present is making soap. All this will help them to become independent. They will also live there with appropriate facilities, it will be their home, they will belong! To do this we need you help.

Your help is invaluable. You will change these children's' lives. Thank you!
