We want to come home
It is very embarrassing for me to ask for help in this way, but we are becoming desperate. I do not have any other way of getting help. I feel that I have failed my family.
I am an Australian citizen with a 13 year old daughter (who was born in Taiwan and is now an Australian citizen too) and a Filipino partner. We have been living in Taiwan together for 14 years.
In 2003 I found myself without a job in Australia and fell into a deep depression. I found I may be able to get work as a tutor in Taiwan, so I travelled there in 2004, to get work. I was able to find some work, but the salary and hours were small.
I was feeling lonely and depressed in a foreign land when I met my partner in 2006 and we started our relationship. She helped me through some of my darkest periods of my life and we had a beautiful daughter in 2007.
Also, in 2007 my employment finished, we did not have enough money to leave Taiwan as a family, so I was forced to find other work to support my partner and new born daughter. Hence, I have been trapped here for over 12 years.
I was 60 years old at that time and work was again getting harder to find. I decided to do tutoring in my home. I was able to build up a small number of students, but this only gave us enough money to cover our living expenses.
In 2009 my father died and we were not able to get back to see him before it happened.
In 2018 my mother died and again we were unable to visit her before her death.
My daughter never met any of her grandparents.
I am now 72 years old and it is getting harder and harder to find tutoring work and our resident visas will expire soon.
My partner is not allowed to work in Taiwan, because she is on a spouse visa attached to my visa. I also owe some money in Hong Kong (about AU$5000) and I have been summoned to appear in court in April 2020. (I can furnish evidence of this through email if required, as I cannot paste copies of legal documents to this site.) I have applied to the Australian Embassy in Taiwan, but they cannot help me, because my problems are financial. If my life was in danger, they would be able to help. I cannot apply for a pension, because I am in Taiwan. To add to my problems I also suffered a heart attack in 2017 and underwent heart bypass surgery. My recovery has only achieved 60% to date.
I want to come home with my family, so I can establish a stable environment for my daughter.. I don't want to leave my family with nothing when I die.
They deserve better than what I am giving them right now. Even when we get back to Australia we will have nothing until I am able to secure a pension or work for myself, and my wife is able to find a job.
To take this next big step, I require assistance to cover air fares, permanent residence visa for partner, Australian passport for daughter, transport for some of our precious personal items that we have accumulated over the years, the Hong Kong debt and setting up costs when I first arrive back in Australia
This is why I am seeking your help to get us all back to Australia.
If you live in Australia opening a support campaign would be a great help to us. It does not cost anything to do.
Your help no matter how small will be greatly appreciated.
