I need a home

According to Economist Intelligence Unit's 2019 Worldwide Cost of Living Survey, Hong Kong is the most expensive place to live in the world. The latest average cost per square foot in Hong Kong is about HK$13,700 according to Midland Realty! I need to spend an estimate of HK$5.5 Million for a 400 square feet flat! Even the cheapest flat available in the private market is over HK$4 Million! In contrast to the price for an apartment, the average monthly salary in Hong Kong was at an estimate of HK$17,000 only. I wouldn't say it's impossible for me to afford my own apartment in my hometown but as you can see the chance is quite slim. I am not a jobless person, however, the HK$5.5 Million is definitely not an easy goal to be reached as I need money for food and transport as well.

Isn't there any public housing program to support people like me? Well, I am not qualify for it given my monthly wage has breached the requirement. In order to be eligible for public housing program, the maximum amount of monthly salary for one person is roughly HK$12,000. Just to give you a reference, the median monthly starting salary of university graduate was HK$14,395 in 2017 according to SCMP. What that means is as long as you have a job, you are no longer eligible to apply any public housing.

I have been saving up as hard as I can since graduated from college and HK$0.5 Million is what I have. My goal is to save enough so that I can move on to a new chapter of my life; to build my own family. However, the increment in property price is way quicker than the normal civilians' saving rate. A 20% down payment is what I need for a HK$4 Million mortgage and I am still HK$0.3 Million short.

Honestly, I feel quite helpless in this city. No matter how hard I work, I am unable to solve one of the basic needs; a shelter. I was born in this place and I love it as all my memories belong to here. Would any of you able to give me a hand to solve and tackle the pressing problem? Thanks everyone!
