About

Support our debut at BAM Next Wave 2018.

I hunger for you, October 31-November 3, 2018 at the BAM Fisher.

A new evening-length work for five dancers, I hunger for you focuses on the need for faith and the collective desire for transformation. Set in a starkly beautiful environment defined by light and its absence (created by my longtime lighting designer Roderick Murray), the piece looks deeply into the impulse to lose oneself in ecstasy, ritual, and desire—riding an edge between barely controlled abandon and vibrating stillness.

The Inspiration Behind I hunger for you

I hunger for you is based on long term research into faith, violence, life force, and compassion. We have been developing some very intense and rigorous practices where we’ve been excavating a kind of pulse from the body. One of the main questions driving our research is, “Where does the desire for faith locate itself in the body?”

In my process, performers achieve intense energetic states that break down form, where different shades of a highly-trained body become revealed, accessible, visible. This interplay with power and vulnerability is my practice’s core. In I hunger for you, we’re sourcing a deeply human desire - located in the subterranean recesses of our bodies - to connect. With each other, with a divine force, with something outside or within ourselves. It doesn’t matter where we look. What matters is that, at some point in this fleeting existence, we look, pull, take, give, and feel hunger.

Why We Are Fundraising

I hunger for you is my most ambitious project to date, allowing me to work on a completely different scale, including embracing a cast of 5 performers and collaborating, for the first time, with a composer and costume designer! The costs associated with working at this level are also new to me and are proving quite steep. I need to support my incredible artists at as high a level as possible to reflect their artistry and long-term dedication to this project.

I am incredibly honored to present this work as part of BAM Next Wave 2018 following world premiere performances at LUMBERYARD Contemporary Performing Arts Center, as part of an inaugural year BAM/LUMBERYARD partnership.

Your contribution will directly support my performers and collaborators.

The Creative Team

I have been working with some incredible collaborators over the past year, including the most exquisite performers: Joanna Kotze, Dylan Crossman, Burr Johnson, Christian Allen, and Lindsey Jones. My long-time, wildly talented design collaborator, Roderick Murray, is leading our design team and is joined by the awesome Composer Sivan Jacobovitz and fantastic Costume Designer Harriet Jung (also known as part of the design duo Reid & Harriet). I am so very grateful to be working with such brilliant artists all around!
