Husky Sledding for PAWS

Update posted by Julie Matthews On Feb 07, 2019

I will be on my challenge nine weeks today 🙀 doing my days training on setting up camp how to set up the sleds and harness the dogs, bed them down for the night and how to make super without burning the tent down before setting out with the rest of the team the next day.The flights are all booked now and I have nearly all my kit so just a few odds and ends to get.The challenge has been published in two of local magazines and the local paper so fingers crossed that will generate some more donations.Training is going ok and is a lot easier now the weather is better fingers crossed it stays that way.

Well back in training after the festive break and we all managed to get soaking wet on our walks but there we go.I got a fright today when I worked out in 12 weeks I will be in the UK waiting to set off on my adventure

Still I suppose this horrid cold snap is a taste of things to come hopefully with out the rain !,I have been trying on and testing all my thermals and thick socks and how wondering how many layers of clothes I could fit under my skisuit and still be able zip it up and move.I have ticked a few more things off my kit list so all looking good there

Obviously I have not been able to practice my camping skills so will just have to pick that up quickly when I am there I supposemthe main thing is not to set fire to the tent or yourself whilst trying melt snow to make a cup of tea

We are off to Singapore on Friday hurrah so at least it will be warm there for our walks and I can train in the hotel gym which will be good

Time is flying, Definitely on a count down now, Julie!

Season greetings to everybody

No zumba until the new year but we are still doing our two walks each week now doing 14k instead of 7k We did one on Christmas Eve so didnt feel too bad about having a few extra treats and drinks on Christmas day

I recently got the flight details for the challenge so I am going to book my flights to Heathrow in the next few days as I will have to stay overnight ( and it will be Easter weekend on my way back ) as the flights leave very early in the morning to Oslo then onwards to Kiruna and the return from Kiruna via Arlanda arrive early evening

We are going to Singapore in January so I am going to go through my kit list and see what I am missing Santa did bring a few things so that was good 🤗

Booking the flights must make the challenge seem closer now. Sounds like a lot of preparatory work going on!!

Well since we got back from Singapore the weather has been rather grim and has made our walking training a bit haphazard but when we have managed to get out we have increased our walk to 14k so that is now our minimum walk plus I still have zumba and the Shelter but also due to the rain and mud it has proved mostly impossible to walk any dogs

I have also had dental surgery so I dont want any flu or colds for the next month while it heals.

I am also getting help from my more arty friends and those that are much better on the PC than me to do a sponsorship form that folks can fill in as not everybody wishes to donate on line

Julie, you are doing well to even get 14k walks under your belt between the showers and storms.

Firstly I would like to give a great big thank you to Maria for the great flyer that she has done for me I am sure it will help those donations roll in ! Also a bigh thank you to those that have donated already please go tell your friends

I am back into my training routine now of 4 Zumba class two 7-14k walks twice a week which will increase to 14 -21 in the new year and then to 28k and of course the shelter on Sundays I am also going to see about a personal trainer for a few tips for my upper body work

I am going to go through all the stuff I bought while I was away and dig out my winter gear and see what else I have to buy to complete my kit! Maybe Santa will send me some bits and bobs

Gary is lending me his hip flask as I reckon a wee snifter will be nice before bed or at least make the horror of sharing a tent with a random stranger less

Well I managed to get a lot of equipment ticked off my list in Singapore thankfully there were some sales on but still the card took a bit of a beating ! now I have all manner of kit including wool and cashmere socks,a bright yellow North Face sturdy duffle bag, a ruck sack OMG I am so not a ruck sack girl but it is bright pink! a head torch and a multipurpose Swiss Army knife so as I have to practice with this stuff before I go maybe I can creep ninja like along the street in the dark and scare the nieghbours allthough maybe not near us especially as hunting season has started🙀

We are in Phuket for a week to celebrate Garys birthday so have been a bit lazy and greedy and will have to really shift my my sorry self when I get back to the reality of four Zumba classes and two walks a week plus my fave exercise the shift at the shelter on Sunday

Happy birthday Gary! Plenty of time to get into the fitness regime when you get back, Julie. x

We are in Singapore at the moment and I have my kit list with me.I managed to get a few things off Amazon then had a couple of disasters so gave up there so I am now trotting round the shops looking for proper cold weather gear and you would be amazed at the amount of stuff there is here for such a warm place. We have been doing a lot of walking and I am going to go to the hotel gym so I can keep up some level of training
