Husky Rescue South Africa is a non-profit organisation that specialises in the rescue and re-homing of huskies and other Nordic breeds of dogs.

Husky Rescue has developed a program to accommodate these unwanted, abandoned and very often abused dogs. Husky Rescue SA is contacted by a member of the public or an animal welfare organisation. The dog is then taken to a veterinary clinic where he or she is treated for any illness or injuries, sterilised, vaccinated, de-wormed and micro-chipped. The dog is then placed in a foster home or at the Husky Haven until a new owner can be found.

The organisation relies on donations and small adoption fees for funding. Operating expenses are relatively high as vet bills are costly and the rescue is currently running at full capacity!

During my time at Husky rescue, I was fortunate enough to get to know Joanne van Niekerk (Founder of Husky Rescue). After hours of conversation I started to understand how much time, money and effort goes into an operation such as theirs.

Volunteers play a big part in any shelter, especially when it comes to the maintenance of the Haven, something that often gets overlooked.

I have been volunteering there for over a month now and my life and general happiness is at an all time high, there is something therapeutic about this place and the sense of joy I get from being around these beautiful huskies is something I can’t put into words.

That being said i have offered to address a few of the maintenance issues:

1. Make the haven safer for the Huskies.

2. Make it more comfortable for the Huskies .

3. Improve the aesthetics of the Haven.

I started by rallying up some friends who know their way around a tool box to help fix the dogs Wendy houses (as you can see by the pictures they need some TLC). There are over 15 compounds at husky Rescue and as you can imagine the costs started to add up fast!

Unfortunately I do not possess the funds needed to finish up with the reconstruction of all the Wendy houses, as well as new fencing and gates. The current fencing is not pleasant (see pictures) nor durable and can become a hazard with time to the animals. Huskies are the Houdini's of the dog world so their enclosures need to be secure. The haven has made little make shift wire locks to strengthen the security of the gates but it is only a temporary fix and desperately needs an upgrade.

After doing some research and contacting numerous fencing/gating companies for quotes, i realised that this is not going to be a cheap operation. I tried asking for the fencing and gating to be donated and installed free of charge or at least get some sort of reasonable discount but sadly i did not get the response i hoped for. However, this has not deterred me.

I now look to the public, friends and family to help me make this project become a reality. I urge everyone to please assist me in this cause. No matter how small the Donation, every little bit helps to make a difference!

If you are unable to make a contribution, I urge you to volunteer your time at your local shelter! Educate yourself and others as to why adoption is the way forward and help make a difference in these animals lives!
