Hurricane Katrina ServeUP Project

Hi there!

I am doing a service trip with a team of 20 people from Wesleyan University to go down to New Orleans and rebuild homes that were devastated by Hurricane Katrina back in 2005. This trip means so much for our team and we would be eternally grateful if you would kindly donate even just $1 to help cover the expenses for our trip, which amounts to $575. We have many students in the team who cannot afford to pay the entire amount but have been preparing themselves and dedicating their efforts and hearts into this issue.

To make a long story short, this behemoth of a storm literally ripped communities apart and destroyed many people's lives - over 50,000 people (especially those from the more impoverished regions) had to be relocated and placed into temporary, crude, disgusting shelters. Government response was slow and volunteer efforts were present but not enough. Even 8 years after the disastrous event there is still so much rebuilding and cleaning up to do down in New Orleans. As one of the most beautiful and culturally diverse cities in the world, New Orleans has stood through thick and thin to preserve the very traditions and values that define what it means to be an American.

Through the ServeUP Project, a nation-wide trip organized by Intervarsity Christian Fellowship USA and hosted by Gentilly Baptist Church for the New Orleans chapter, we hope to make a difference in the lives that were destroyed along with the homes during Hurricane Katrina. We hope to show the world what a difference 20 people can make. We hope to give communities hope and offer them our physical and moral support. We believe that the best way to serve society is to make sure that people have a place to live and a chance to take charge of their lives - to show the world that all it takes is a little bit of compassion and sweat to give someone hope.
