My name is Jerrell Wilson, president of Specialty Kitchen & Bath.
Hurricane Dorian has caused great devastation to two islands of the Bahamas, Grand Bahama where I reside and Abaco. Many families have lost their homes, cars, children and other family members. The things we take for granted such as flushing the toilet, taking a bath, making a hot meal or having something cold to drink, have been more challenging.
There has been a lot of devastation to homes but there has been a lot of devastation to businesses as well. There is a possibility some or many Bahamians may lose their jobs due to the destruction of Hurricane Dorian. There are many Bahamians who have not worked or receive their salary since this tragedy. I want you to imagine how this situation adds to the devastation; your house is destroyed, your vehicle destroyed, your child or one of your family members died during the hurricane, in addition to that you lose your job. This makes it difficult to provide for you and your family basic needs and is enough to cause anyone to have emotional and mental stress.
My goal is to have 500,000 people or businesses donate as much as you can towards the survival of small businesses in the Bahamas and their employees. You can donate $5, $10, $50, hundreds or thousands of dollars. Many around the world have donated water, food and health care to the Bahamas and we are truly grateful for the supplies each family receive. The money that you donate today will help many families now and in the years to come receive their salaries needed to take care of their family basic needs by giving the small business community an opportunity to survive this tragedy. The funds receive will assist with repairs and other key priority items needed.
Why am I doing this? I can relate. Yes, I am one of those who had extensive damages to my home, vehicles and my business but I realize that I am not the only business that has been affected. It is sad for me to see many employees and their families being affected financially since the storm. I am determine to do what it takes to help them thrive during a very challenging time.
I am from the Bahamas and live in the Bahamas and I know the small business community well. I see everyday the needs of small business owners and have conversations with them daily. The funds you donate will make a huge impact in the lives of small business owners and their employees. Ultimately this is about saving lives of Bahamians and our future.
