Campaign Story
Do you know what it’s like to live through a hurricane?
And do you know what it’s like to live through a hurricane—and then spend the following days helping others?
Chabad of Tallahassee does.
Taking the brunt of Hurricane Hermine on the chin, Chabad of Tallahassee completely lost power—but none of its energy.
Working
immediately after the storm to be there for the thousands of Jews it
serves, Chabad didn’t stop or slow down—despite catastrophic damage and
loss to its community and student center.
Chabad’s Rabbi Shneur
and Chanie Oirechman and their nine children, including an infant,
stayed in town without power for over four days to keep Chabad going.
And all the while, as the rest of Tallahassee was digging out, Chabad of
Tallahassee was busy stepping up.
The Oirechmans waited hours on
line at the only local open supermarket, purchasing large supplies of
water, ice and fresh goods for the Jewish community members and students
in need.
They then stayed in Tallahassee for Shabbos, putting
together a warm meal and even warmer community spirit on Friday night
for a community otherwise out in the cold—and Shabbos morning was more
of the positive same.
When the community needed them most, they were there. Now Chabad of Tallahassee needs YOU most.
Chabad
has lost thousands of dollars’ worth of food—perishables and other
items that normally would feed thousands of students across the fall
semester. Chabad has also suffered tremendous property damage—and water
damage to synagogue supplies that now must be replaced. And we hope to
do this with funds raised through this GoFundMe.
As a matter of
fact, Chabad’s regular annual fundraising efforts, which were well
underway at the time Hurricane Hermine struck, have ground to a halt as
we regroup to handle its aftermath.
Gearing up for the High Holiday seasons is expensive enough.
Doing it now—on top of huge hurricane-damage expenses—is even more expensive.
But Chabad of Tallahassee knows it can count on you, its friends all over the world, to help.
We didn’t let a hurricane stop us. Don’t let your hesitance stop you.
