On March 4, 2014, Elizabeth (Becky) and Mark Int-Hout lost everything but, quite literally, the clothes on their back and the vehicles in which they drove to work in a fast moving house fire.

Becky is the postmaster at Bowler, Wisconsin. A community of 302, where everybody knows just about everybody else. She is a well known figure because she is always smiling, and helping people out in some way--big or small. Whether it is running the local food pantry for the last four-plus years, or making sure that the Elders and disabled on her mail routes get their mail hand delivered if they are unable to get out to the rural route boxes, or any other number of things she does. It was while doing the job she loves that she got the call about her housefire. Rushing home, she arrived just in time to see it fully engulfed in flame, and to find out that Payton, the family's precious yellow Labrador Retriever, succumbed to the fire; Payton's canine sister survived.

To make matters more sinister, the insurance settlement leaves a huge gap; after putting three children through college (and one still there) there just won't be enough money to rebuild. There are even darker times, and decisions, ahead for the family. As if this isn't enough to deal with, her position is being phased out by USPS in September as our post office is converting to a part time facility--something we are seeing much of out here in the very rural areas; she worries that her husband Mark's salary as the head sawyer at Kersten Lumber in Wittenberg will be enough to keep them afloat while she looks for work in an already small job market.

Speaking with her the other day, Becky told me, "I haven't hit rock bottom. I still have faith in the Lord and my fellow man. I feel like a rich woman." How many of us would have such an attitude?

I'm hoping that we can show the family that the light at the end of the tunnel isn't always a train, and that sometimes it's just a light. A bright, shining, happy light of love and caring. This is a lady who deserves to get some good handed back.
