I'm John Benedict Tan andd I'm doing this for my Mother, Eideleen Tan. Hope you have time to read our story. Pardon some of my terms, sentence construction, and etc if it might be wrong.

My mother, age 52 with 3 children and 2 adorable grandson has been living active and healthy for the past years. She's the light of our home, a loving wife and mother, her grandkid's super grandmom, she's the one we can always count on. Our youngest sibling is about to graduate in March, and we really want her to be with us to celebrate that milestone of our family. Unexpectedly, she became ill.

In the last quarter of 2017, my Mom was in and out of the Hospital. 1st hospitalization was in October where she was confined for 5 days at Metro North Medical Center and the Diagnosis of the Doctor was Pneumonitis, her first complain being difficulty in breathing. We already spent more or less 50,000 pesos for the hospitalization excluding the medicines prescribed by her Doctor.

We were all optimistic that she'll get better by continuously taking the prescribed medicines since it is just Pneumonitis as the Doctor said, but she kept complaining about the pain in her chest and lower back at the same time she's losing weight. So she was admitted again in November in the same hospital for almost a week spending almost 70,000 pesos. I already applied for her Health card but it still can't be used until January.

The Doctor decided to have an MRI to check further, and below are the results.

We consulted my friend's father who is also a Doctor just to save money. After they checked my mom and the MRI result, they advised us to bring my Mom to East Avenue Medical Center where they will refer us to a Doctor of Internal medicine. Eventually, my Mom got admitted on Dec 17.

After few days of checking, monitoring, lab tests, etc in East Ave Medical Center, the Nephrologist told us that she has an Acute Kidney Failure with Chronic Kidney Disease - Stage 5, secondary to her Polycystic Kidney. In other words, both of her kidneys has lost its ability to do their job effectively so a transplant was advised if there is a donor but for the time being, Dialysis is the only answer. She was advised to undergo continuous dialysis, 3x a week. Plus there's water in her lungs that a Pulmonologist needed to drain out. There's also an infection in her liver that was caused by her Polycystic liver. In short, there's a lot of medication going.

Spending Christmas and also New Year in the Hospital.

After a month of confinement in East Ave Medical Center, the Doctors gave a go signal to discharge my Mom and that she could continue her dialysis and her medication at home. Of course, being in a Hospital for a month would really pile up the bills. Our hospital bills reached more than 280,000 pesos - EXCLUDING some medicines and Dialysis of approximately 2000 pesos per session, 3x a week. (it's only around 2000 pesos since there is a deduction from Philhealth).

PCSO (Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office) shouldered 50,000 pesos, PHILHEALTH shouldered 13,000. Some of our relatives extended financial help but most of it just went to her medicines. Moving on, I've spent more or less 220,000 pesos to get her out of the hospital.

*1 Doctor asked to be paid personally instead of adding it to the hospital bill

Billing statement from East Ave medical center, PCSO and PHILHEALTH already deducted

After spending a month - by January 18, 2018 we got her bills cleared and she was able to go home. We are optimistic again that the dialysis would help her recover and somehow get back to her life but then she was still bed ridden mostly sleeping and have lost her appetite. On January 27, we rushed her back to the Hospital because she's fainting and there they told us that her Hemoglobin went down and she needed to be admitted again. This time, we brought her to Pacific Global Medical Center since we can now use her Health card and also her Nephologist is in there.

I spoke with the Nephologist last Friday Feb 2, 2018. He discussed the current condition of my Mom, in the initial Xray it showed that water almost covered her lungs again. Nephologist said Medication and dialysis should take care of it. But on the follow up Xray, instead of subsiding it covered all of it.

He decided to get help from a Pulmonologist to drain it again. After the draining was done, the Nephrologist said it's not looking good because when the Pulmonologist drained the water, there were blood included this time wherein it should only be water. So the Nephrologist scheduled a CT SCAN for my Mom to check and study whether there is Cancer already.

Now we are still waiting for the CT SCAN result and advise from her Doctors if she can go home, but from the looks of it, she's nowhere near from being discharged. Running bill is already almost 300,000 pesos and healthcard coverage is only 220,000 but you all know that it is still for review and approval if they will cover my mother's illness or not. We are hoping that they'll cover it because honestly we don't have that amount of money anymore to pay the hospital bills plus the continuous medication and dialysis.

We are trying our best to get help again from PCSO, and I've already asked help from the relatives of my Mom but it's not enough.

My Mom and Dad had a business before wherein we lived a life full of blessings if I may say, but that business hit rock bottom 3 years ago where they got nothing left but debts and until now I'm shouldering most that debt. I'm the type of person where as much as possible I will shoulder it all if I can and would not get help from anyone. But I already spent the savings that I had in her previous Hospitalizations. I don't know where else to get financial help.

That is why we are knocking on your good hearts to help us with her hospitalization and continuous medication and dialysis.

  • I don't know if you still remember me but I used to teach you English back in KCamp. I know exactly how you feel. I went through that with my Mom. Don't worry, God has a way of getting us though this. He will get your whole family through.

  • I just want to say thank you for those who donated and will be donating. My mother had an operation last Feb 7, 2018 where a tube was inserted in her lungs to drain the water continuously because the water just keeps on covering her lungs. Currently she’s still under monitoring whether the water in her lungs will subside. We also asked the Doctors if we can transfer to a public hospital since the health card already reached the limit and current running bill is already at almost 350,000 pesos, but they didn’t give a go signal in her current condition. We’re still hoping and praying that everything will be fine. Again, Thanks to all of you
