Hospital volunteer work in Sri Lanka

I'm a third year adult and child nursing student from the University of Southampton. As a part of our nursing degree, we have been given the opportunity to carry out an elective placement to help us build on our professional development for which I will be travelling to Sri Lanka to volunteer in a hospital in Ambalangoda this summer.

Ambalangoda is a small seaside town in the south coast of Sri Lanka, the hospital that I will be volunteering at is government run with 20 doctors and 2 surgeons. I will have the chance to work with their multidisciplinary team in different hospital settings such as A and E, paediatrics, gynaecology, neonatal unit and see how their staff deal with some of the issues that we face here in the UK such as staff shortages. I will also get to learn about the use of natural Ayurvedic medicine as an alternative to western medicines and see what kind of therapeutic benefit they have.

Having lived in Sir Lanka for the first 6 years of my life this would be an amazing opportunity for me to experience their health care system from a professional point of view and compare how it has been able to develop in last couple of years. As nursing is vocation that shares the same values across the globe it will be really interesting to see firsthand the similarities and differences between practices in Sri Lanka and the UK. To be able to share knowledge and learn new skills to bring into my future practice is an invaluable opportunity.

To fund this placement, I will be taking on extra shifts and doing fundraisers throughout the year. However it is a substantial amount so any donations toward the cost of flights and accommodation would be greatly appreciated.
