It truly breaks my heart to be writing this. This is Rejoice, daughter of one of my long time assistants. My name is Melinda and I am a US citizen; Rejoice was born and lives in the Philippines. I am starting this fundraiser on behalf of her father Deric, in hopes to raise money and help her and her family in this difficult time.
Rejoice is only 2 years old. Last year Rejoice fell ill. She had a constant temperature and was having difficulties with her heart. In February of last year she was diagnosed with Lupus. The family opted for therapeutic treatment before having a kidney biopsy. The first month of treatments went well, but then Rejoice's health rapidly began to decline. She was hospitalized 4 times within 3 months. Each stay lasting from 7-15 days at a time. Due to the frequent hospital and doctors visits, the family could not afford the $50,000 PHP cost of the kidney biopsy the doctors needed in order to properly diagnose Rejoice. So, the doctors decided to treat the condition with steroids, transfer factor and Digoxin (for her heart).
Deric and his wife were finally able to save for the kidney biopsy, but prior to the biopsy, they required blood work. Rejoices blood work came back displaying a high amount of large white blood cells. Because of this, the hematologist did not give clearance to proceed with the kidney biopsy as the symptoms and blood results indicate a large possibility Rejoice has leukemia. Instead, they said it is necessary to perform a bone marrow biopsy to confirm whether or not it is leukemia as lupus and leukemia often times mimic symptoms. Because this procedure is more expensive than a kidney biopsy, the family was forced to wait until they were able to save enough funds.
After finally being able to save enough for the biopsy, they took Rejoice to Davao Doctors Hospital May 13th, 2017 to have the procedure completed. Again, blood work was required prior to the procedure and again they were not able to perform the procedure. Rejoice's hemoglobin and platelets were extremely low and she required a blood transfusion. She is still in the hospital while the doctors try to regulate her blood levels so that they can perform the biopsy. This of course sets the family back once again.
I am trying to raise funds so that Rejoice can receive the treatment she needs so that the doctors can diagnose her and properly treat her. Though the doctors still need to perform the bone marrow biopsy before diagnosing her with leukemia, they had advised that her blood work strongly indicates it is and that the family should start preparing for the required treatment. The doctors are not able to treat any illness without a certain diagnosis. The longer Rejoice waits, the worse her health becomes.
Deric is one of the best assistants I have ever had. Even with everything that him and his family are going through, he has not missed one day of work and has never turned any work in late. He has never complained and has never used his situation as an excuse. Last night he sent me a photo of Rejoice sleeping in the hospital bed and I couldn't help but notice that his laptop was with him and opened. While he was sitting with his daughter in a hospital room, he was also sitting there working. He really goes above and beyond to be able to help his daughter. It is awful that every time the light starts shining, it is quickly dimmed due to the time spent saving funds.
Rejoice seems to take after her daddy. Even with all of the discomfort or pain; she manages to smile. I ask that you please donate what you can and share this with your family and friends. Every effort is a great help. The family has a long road ahead of them and we’re hoping the funds will help alleviate some of the expenses.
I will try to keep everyone updated as much as possible. We are working on setting up a Facebook page so that the family can share live updates.
