Small scale farmers breeding fish and chicken along the Lake Victoria County of Homabay, Kenya try their best to make ends meet and provide for their families. Their main source of livelihood is fish and chicken farming, which for the most part is crippled by the inability to get affordable feeds for the fish and chicken. Because of this, most of them are left frustrated.
Noting that protein nutrient is the most needed portion in animal feeds and makes the overall cost of feeds expensive, this has given need to set up a black soldier fly farm close to the farmers and have them access this critical nutrient in an affordable manner for their feeds. Further, they will be trained on how to rare their own Black Soldier Fly and assisted to set up with technical training to make them independent. This will go a long way to help these elderly farmers provide for their families and ensure food is put on the table for their children.
Sustainable community: Further, rearing of Black Soldier Fly will help conserve environment because it will enable recycling of waste and thus create a clean environment for all. The business will further create jobs for youths and rehabilitate needy single mothers and young girls who resort to exchange "sex for fish" by the Lake Victoria shores as a tool to get their daily meal and give them alternative means of earning a living and reduce infections and reinfections of HIV/AIDS around this lake-side town of Homabay as part of social responsibility. 10% of the amount raised will go towards rehabilitating and equipping the single mothers into earning their living with dignity.
