In the early hours of 9 June 2019, Jeremy Barnard was run over at a robot on the corner of Parfitt Avenue and Nelson Mandela Drive, Bloemfontein. Jeremy was crossing a green light, when an Isuzu bakkie came speeding over the red light. The Isuzu bakkie knocked Jeremy of his bike and send him flying through the air. Jeremy hit the road head first and lost consciousness...
The man who was driving the red Isuzu bakkie fled the scene and hid in the parking lot of a hotel nearby. The driver was arrested later at his house in De Aar, but was released on bail of R1000. He will appear later in court again for the reckless and negligent driving charge.
Initially Jeremy was kept in an induced coma for the first few weeks after the accident. He received medical treatment for pressure on the brain, cracked ribs, fluid in the lungs and seven stitches on his chin (for a cut caused by his helmet braking from the impact). The cut has healed, but the build-up fluid in the lungs caused an infection which the medical team struggled to clear.
Jeremy has been moved from Universitas Neuro-ICU to Pelonomi High Care (04/07/2019). His fever is down, the infection is almost cleared, all wounds from the accident have healed and he is breathing on his own. At Pelonomi, he will start his rehabilitation. He did however sustain a brain injury after hitting the road head first. How serious the brain injury is will only be determined later. Either way, the road of healing ahead for Jeremy is very very long (18 months or longer, depending if it was grey or white brain matter that was injured). Jeremy will have to receive lots and lots of therapy at Pelonomi and eventually from home. He will have to learn how to swallow food, speak and walk again. He does respond to his name and seems to recognize his family. With a lot of concentration he can blink his eyes upon request and move his left arm. We are grateful that he is ready to start his rehabilitation.
This accident, which happened exactly a month before his 21st birthday, has shaken his family and friends. His mother, Rouvé Barnard, thanks everybody for their prayers and all who has shown her family support during this time. She prays that Jeremy will gain consciousness and make a full recovery.
