Hit-and-run Survivor in Critical Care

Update posted by Marianne Bekker On Jul 16, 2019

Rouve: "So I make up some ultra-healthy smoothie meals for JR, sweet potato with yogurt, ensure and a splash of cinnamon and one with avocado, chickpeas, yogurt and ensure.... I start feeding him and halfway he seems to lose interest... I ask him whether he had supper, he blinks, was it good? another blink, have you had enough? One more blink, turned his head and wouldn't open his mouth again. Thank you God for nourishing meals, special visits that keep him going and healing (even though we can't always see it) he got very emotional at one stage - it took a lot to not cry with him 💔by the time we left he was peaceful."

Rouve: "Thank you for all prayers, Jeremy has been eating yogurt for the last 5 days, but we still have a very long road of recovery ahead. The fact of the matter is that he will need to learn to do the simple things in life again, chew, walk, talk, use his hands to write, type, brush his teeth etc. Please continue to pray for his complete healing and for us as a family."

Rouve: "We put some photos of family on the wall for him last night - he's off all drips (except the feeding) and thus off the sedation now too that was making him doze/sleepy in between. He let go of my hand to grasp dad's when prompted to do so and lifted his hand for dad to high 5, even though he couldn't open it all the way. Should start OT on Monday, praise God."

Jeremy has been moved from Universitas Neuro-ICU to Pelonomi High Care. His fever is down, the infection is almost cleared, all wounds from the accident have healed and he is breathing on his own. At Pelonomi, he will start his rehabilitation. He did however sustain a brain injury after hitting the road head first - how serious the brain injury is will only be determined later. Either way, the road of healing ahead for Jeremy is very very long (18 months or longer, depending if it was grey or white brain matter that was injured). Jeremy will have to receive lots and lots of therapy at Pelonomi and eventually from home. He will have to learn how to swallow food, speak and walk again. He does respond to his name and seems to recognize his family. With a lot of concentration he can blink his eyes upon request and move his left arm. We are grateful that he is ready to start his rehabilitation. Thank you for all the love and support the Barnards are receiving. Please keep them in your prayers.

Rouve: "I spent an hour with Jeremy this morning, he's looking good, awake and looking around. His fever is down, antibiotics were changed. He let me brush his teeth and tasted the toothpaste, it's the first thing he's "tasted" since the accident, as he's had tube feeding only from day 3/4. He is not able or trying to talk yet.. I wrote : I love you on his blackboard and wiped it clean. I put a piece of chalk in his right hand, he held it so hard it cracked., I put the shorter piece back in his hand and he squiggled on the board, even though he wasn't looking, he knew to "write". Baby steps... I showed him a photo of Buddy waiting for him on his bed and he seemed to recognize him. Thank you all for your continued prayers and support.

And just like that, your whole life can change.... What you once knew as your day-to-day normal can fade into the distance, a vague memory of what used to be. You forget who you are, and all you can think of all day is when you can go see him again and whisper sweet encouraging words in his beautiful ears, hold his huge, rough hands and see those 3/4 blue eyes looking around. God give us the strength, patience and hope to face each day, one day at a time We'll get though this 👍 #proudmommatojeremy #teamjeremy#wecandothistogether #loveyouseun
