Good day to you

Thank you for showing an interest in volunteering or sponsor at the planned Hibiscus Coast Seniors Club.

Let me tell you a bit about what the planned Hibiscus Coast Seniors Club is all about.

The idea for the club came about when my elderly mother of 87 came to live with me in Shelly Beach. Not being in a retirement home, where activities are organised for the members in the complexes, she felt very lonely and isolated during the day while I was at work in my full time place of employment.

I began to ask around using various methods and found that there were very few places seniors could socialise and entertain or be entertained in an accessible and safe environment.

A small quiet Voice began to put ideas of starting a small social club where a few of the seniors could gather together and socialise with each other and attend various functions or activities together like an exercise group, chess group, music group or card playing group.

This Senior’s club would obviously be for the reasonably active, independent over 60s age group and would start out at three mornings per week running from 7am to 1pm.

Supervision would be given by a group of volunteers from the community who will, together, bring a measure of quality and interest back into the Senior’s lives turning the latter years into a genuinely ‘Golden’ age of fun and contentment.

Membership fees will be based solely on a donation basis as many of the anticipated seniors will only have their small government pension to live off so will not be able to pay any large fees.

This is why we will be calling for volunteers to supervise and for sponsors to pay for costs like meals, hall rentals and other equipment that may be required for the activities involved.

Volunteers will be allowed tea and a meal at the end of their shift and for every 10 shifts volunteered during a month, a performance/experience certificate will be issued to confirm experience received. This certificate could improve chances of gaining employment where experience is now vital into getting employed.

Our vision for the future is to secure a permanent place of safety that can host the Seniors Club every day, giving the families of the Seniors peace of mind while at the same time giving the Seniors the care and attention they deserve in their advanced age. We would also like to obtain two minibus shuttles that can collect the members from the various areas (Port Edward to Port Shepstone) and that can also be used to transport the Seniors on day trips like shopping or sightseeing at the crocodile farm, etc.

Should you wish to volunteer as a carer or be a sponsor, please fill in the attached form so we can keep you updated with the progress of the Hibiscus Coast Seniors Club.

Many thanks for caring about our precious seniors!
