Here to make a difference

Hi there :)

I have been accepted as a volunteer at the EquiTeam healing centre in America, which specialises in helping veterans and other individuals suffering from mental disorders, such as PTSD.

On the 10th of October 2018, I am going on a six month fact-finding, charity and educational trip to the USA to work with horses that can heal veterans suffering from PTSD and other sufferers dealing with mental disorders. I am aiming to raise £3,000 which will be used to raise money for the at risk youth, veterans and families in need, but to also help fund my trip, in regards to travel costs and stay.

I have just graduated with a Bachelor of Psychology. In the last semester of my university, I wrote my thesis on how horses can heal veterans suffering from PTSD. I was inspired by previous experiences (how horses have helped me personally), but also from my research for my thesis and by several documentaries (e.g. The Horse Boy), books interviews conducted in New Zealand and the USA and from talking to individuals who have found the beneficial effects of horses and healing.

This is a massive opportunity for me to experience and learn first-hand all that I learned whilst researching and composing my thesis. I'm sure it will be a once in a lifetime trip with many humbling but amazing experiences.

Not many people are aware of the positive healing impacts that horses have on individuals suffering from psychological disorders. This is partially because there has not been enough research done to spread the awareness. However, from my research for the thesis, to many people, it has been the life-changing therapy they needed.

How will I help?

The clientele who are receiving the services at this organisation have significant mental health issues that are addressed through this non-traditional approach. The mission of EquiTeam Support Services is to provide a professional team to help to improve the mental health and well-being of all individuals who attend the sessions and integrate them back into society.

My role will be to not only observe but also facilitate the equine therapy sessions, whilst also learning all the aspects of this non-profit organisation. My goal is to make a difference in the lives of others.

So, why do I need your help?

I have been given a date where the EquiTeam centre would like me to start, which leaves me with a short period of time to get everything organised. I have a job at the moment and saving frantically. However, I know that I will not be able to earn enough money to fund myself and support the charity in time…

My funding goal is to have £3,000 to cover all the costs whilst I am there and to, as mentioned, donate money towards the at risk youth and families in need.

I understand that money is tight, therefore, no donation is too small and even a donation 5 pounds would make a positive difference to achieving my goal! If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to ask.
