Campaign Story
My name is Jeanny Kubushi.
I am a fifty-year-old single mother of twin babies, a boy and a girl who are 4 years old. In 2017 when my babies were born, I was diagnosed with pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), which usually originates from a ruptured tumour of the appendix. PMP is a rare disease with an incidence rate of 2 – 4 per million people.
After undergoing two operations and various rounds of chemotherapy in 2017 and 2018, I went into remission. The success of the treatment afforded me the opportunity to see my babies grow, allowed me the time to nurture and love them, gave them precious moments with their mother.
However, I have recently found out that the cancer is back.
My Oncologist, from the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre, recommended that the best course of treatment is that I get cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). I also consulted an oncologist based at a Cleveland, OH hospital in the US and he confirmed that this is my best chance at beating this illness, as this procedure has resulted in recovery for many patients suffering from PMP. Unfortunately, this life saving treatment is not available in South Africa.
I will have to travel to the UK to have the procedures performed at The Hampshire Clinic (www.basingstokecolorectal.co.uk). This will be at a great cost to my family and I, as my medical aid will only be paying a portion of the total cost.
This disease is curable, but I need your help to beat it. Your financial contributions will go towards covering the medical costs, which include the hospital stay (that could be up to 3 weeks), surgery and anesthetists’ fees estimated at approximately £97, 000.00 (R1,929,445.93); traveling costs which includes flights, meals, taxi fares and accommodation before and after surgery are estimated at R70 000.
My medical aid has pledged an ex-gratia amount of US$ 17 500.00 (R 252,547.74), which they say must be used by the end of this year. I have a provisional booking with the surgeon on 15 December 2021. Therefore, I am asking for your urgent contribution towards my treatment, which will afford me a chance at a future with my children.

Update on our Help Jeanny Beat Cancer Fundraising initiative
Update posted by JEANNY KUBUSHI at 10:20 amDear donors and supporters, Due to continued Covid-19 restrictions and travel bans throughout December 2021, we were forced to change our plans for Jeannyâs surgery from 15 December 2021 to 13 April 2022. The funds that we received from our fundraising initiatives were also not enough to take Jeanny to. . . . .
