Helping with the breeding of Asian Elephants

Hi Guys

I am hoping to raise some money in order to be able to go to Sri Lanka to spend a week in two elephant orphanages, to assist with the breeding management of these beautiful creatures - Asian Elephants (Elephas maximus). 

Since 1986 they have been classified as Endangered by IUCN red list and there are approximately 20,000-25,000 left in the wild over the 13 asian countries that have these Asian Elephants. This means the breeding of these animals is vital to keep the species from progressing further towards extinction. 

I am currently studying BSc (Hons) Animal Science (Companion and Zoo Animals) and am going to be taking part in a short distance course to gain further knowledge of their anatomy, nutrition, calf management, reproductive management, AI, and health and disease management to prepare myself for the week I will spend at two orphanages in Kandy, and Uda Walave parks. Here I will spend the week helping with the management and breeding of the animals, and hope to gain further knowledge of the species. 

The total cost of the trip is £1500 which will include the course and trip fees, flights, cheap hotel, and food for the week. I am hoping to also do cake sales, boot sales and any other fund raising available to help get to my goal. 

This course and trip is a collaboration between the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science (Sri Lanka) Chiang Mai University (Thailand) and the Royal Veterinary College (UK), sponsored by Bayer plc UK.
