Hello,

My name is James Miller. I was a Computer Engineering Science student, and now taking a 3 year Networking course (Cisco), with the final year in network security.  Throughout my schooling year I started a few social media groups, Facebook, Twitter, a Website, and a YouTube channel “Millers Tutorials” where I have been starting to share my knowledge I learnt in the classroom. My videos consist of Windows tips and tricks, Network security, Linux Operating systems, Arduino projects (working with micro controllers/hardware programing), and a few other programing videos.  My next task will be working on networking with Cisco.  I am also 80% complete on a website I’m working on so I can share my lecture slides and pdf’s, lab documents, and virtual books, so that people can learn for free.

As a bonus I have collaborated with other students for them to send me all their lecture notes and labs so that I can also share those courses with people that can’t afford to go to school and get the education.

My challenge now with making “networking videos” is that any simulation software is very limited in what you can do or practice, without the real gear.  I have a few real routers and switches myself that I worked very hard to get to practice my schooling and further my education with as we past the functionality of simulation software very quickly.  I need this equipment set up for myself and can’t share it with the public and my followers from my channel.

I just found out my college offers online access to Cisco networking gear but the catch, obviously, is that it’s only for students currently enrolled.  This is where I thought to myself, why can’t I raise money so that I can offer free online access to equipment that less fortunate people can’t access; can’t afford to purchase; or go to school to get the education and hands on learning.

A professor at my college said he would help set up a similar web interface to book time slots to use the equipment like the college uses.  My lectures and labs go through the whole CCNA certification.  Less fortunate people would be able to go and write their certification and help better themselves with a career job and higher education.

I will be looking for the best deal on used Network equipment that meet the CCNA requirements.

What I will be using the money for:

  • Cisco Routers
  • Cisco Switches
  • Cisco wireless access point (for Wireless course, CWNA certification)
  • Networking cables
  • A reasonable computer to act as a terminal server to access the networking equipment and webserver to host a webpage for time slot bookings for network access
  • Equipment stand (rack) to hold routers and switches
  • Power bar(s)
  • Website hosting
